The game was created by a small team of eight developers at the studio Ubisoft Reflections which was wanting to create an experimental game and give free rein to their imagination. The player incarnates a small robot that aims to find a new species of plant capable of supplying the world with oxygen.

Grow Home is a platform adventure game in the 3 th person. The player takes control of a robot named BUD (Botanical Utility Droid) 2 who wants to save his planet and it needs to get hold of the star-plant and grow while climbing ever higher. The player is able to freely explore the open world, and has the ability to individually control the left and right hands of the bucket BUD, with a button for each hand in order to create climbing sensations to the player. With his hands, BUD could reach a certain altitude. Throughout the game, the robot will come with an onboard computer, called MOM, which inform the player gameplay objectives.

The game also allows the player to control the main plant by making him grow branches that the player must connect to flying islands in order to grow the plant. These islands may contain crystals allowing BUD fulfill its energy to enhance its capabilities and offer new gameplay mechanics to the player as a jetpack for example. It is also possible to find animals, plants and other natural elements like waterfalls but also teleport pads allowing the player to move anywhere in the world quickly and act as save points. The player can interact with some of them, for example, the sheet that allows BUD jump higher or flower that allows us to hover temporarily.

Once the player makes up the plant at 2000 meters and sends a seed to MOM, the main objective is completed, and the player has the choice to end his party or collect 8 seeds over. Achieving the latter objective unlocks a special suit that allows the player to jump twice as high. After the success of this goal, the player is free to explore the vast world of Grow Home .

Grow Home was initially confirmed in a post on the official blog of Ubisoft January 22, 2015 3 . It started development as an experimental project created by a team of eight people at Ubisoft Reflections. After testing the project, management of Ubisoft decided to officially launch the title, which was developed in a complete game inspired by The Guide to the Galaxy and Wall-E .

The game has a minimalist graphic style, using the procedural animation and gameplay based on physics, allowing objects and player actions to adapt to any part of the environment. The developers recommend using a joystick to play the game because it allows the player a “deeper connection to the mechanics of the game” 3 . The game was created using the Unity engine and, unlike other Ubisoft titles, it does not require Uplay to be executed. The game was published February 4, 2015 on Steam.
