Sonic Mania is a platform game in 2D developed by Christian Whitehead, Headcannon and PagodaWest Games, overseen by Sonic Team and published by Sega for Nintendo Switch , PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Microsoft Windows . It was announced at the commemoration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the franchise, and was released in August 2017 worldwide. The game describes the adventures of Sonic , Tails and Knuckles , who must once again defeat Dr. Eggman and his new robots, Hard-Boiled Heavies.

The development was led by the programmer Christian Whitehead, who had previously worked on adaptations of classic video games of Sonic. Art, level design, audio and additional programming was provided by independent studies PagodaWest Games and Headcannon, chosen for their work in the community fangame s Sonic Critics praised its level design, soundtrack, presentation and fidelity to the first games of Sonic the Hedgehog ; much of it taking him as an exemplary return for the series against the poor reception of some of its released after ninety games.

The game takes place after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles . After the battle, the Ruby Phantom creates a portal that engulfs Sonic and ruby, while that Little Planet returns to its original home.

Sonic Mania platform follows the style of the first games released for the Megadrive Sonic. Players can select one of the 3 playable characters, each with their own unique abilities. If the player runs out of rings before it can capture the UFO, the special phase ends. Special phasesSonic the Hedgehog 3They return, this time as bonus stages.
